“When you go on vacation, the last thing you have to worry about is the security of your mail. While you’re away, your hold mail service addresses this issue almost effortlessly,” said USPS Vice President Francisco G. Smith. Consumer Advocate. “This service represents our continued commitment to increasing customer reach by making it easier and more convenient for customers to use the postal service.”

You can request USPS mail holding services 30 days in advance of the day you want it to start or the beginning of the next scheduled delivery day. You must request the start date of your mail holding by 3 AM EST (2 AM CT or 12 AM PST) on your requested day, Monday through Saturday.

You can also set up temporary or permanent USPS mail and package forwarding services if you will be away from home for more than 30 days or if you are taking a long-term move.

If you are taking permanent steps, you can also use the forwarding service to update your official address. If you are moving temporarily, you can use the Postal Service’s mail and package forwarding service for a period of up to 15 days or up to 1 year. After the first 6 months, you can extend up to 6 months.

How To Do USPS Mail Forwarding

Once you get online, simply go to the postal service home page and click on the Hold Mail menu option.

You will need to provide your delivery address information and the dates on which you would like the postal service to begin and stop holding your mail.

At the end of the mail holding request process, you will be given a confirmation number so that you can modify the request if you come home early or decide you want to stay on vacation a little longer.

The online service notifies your local post office electronically and all your mail will be held for the specified time and delivery will be resumed on the requested date.
